Proposed Vehicles
Silver Line vehicles are a unique combination of comfort and convenience combined with intelligent technology that creates an efficient, safe ride. While the exact vehicle type for the Silver Line will be announced in the near future, there are a number of things we can tell you about them already.
Vehicle Design
Vehicles are 40-45 feet in length. The partial low-floor contains internal floors that are significantly lower (14 inches above pavement) than high floor buses. They include a rapidly deployable ramp for those with mobility impairments. They incorporate body modifications or additions to create a more modern, aerodynamic and attractive appearance.
Longer, articulated vehicles that have a higher passenger carrying capacity (50% more) than standard vehicles will possibly join the Silver Line fleet. Articulated vehicles can accommodate 80-90 passengers, including standees.
Specialized Logos and Livery
A unique Silver Line identity and graphic treatment will be used to create a specialized identification system. Because of the service differences from existing fixed route services, the visual variation helps riders.
Multiple Door Boarding
Two-doors per side, with wider than normal doors, will allow for quick and efficient loading and unloading.
GPS communication
The Silver Line will use a robust communication system to transmit voice and data and create an integrated transportation system. Among other things, this allows the Silver Line to operate with signal prioritization, which will allow vehicles to communicate with traffic lights and optimize travel times.
Hybrid Engine Technology
A hybrid drive offers numerous operational advantages over conventional diesel buses, such as smoother and quicker acceleration, more efficient braking, improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Operational tests have also shown improved range and reliability over standard diesel buses. Hybrid buses have already entered the fixed route fleet of The Rapid.
Seating Capacity
A standard Silver Line vehicle will seat 41 people and support an additional 20-30 people standing.
Security
Use of silent alarms and on-board and in-station monitoring systems will increase the security of the Silver Line operation.
Level Boarding
Many BRT systems also use low floor buses (or high level platforms with high floor buses) to speed up passenger boardings and enhance accessibility.
Real Time Arrival Information
Stations will have electronic signage that tells passengers when the next bus will be arriving. Vehicle location information will be available to customers on-line for better trip planning.
